Fearne: ‘Holly’s best quality is the fact that, whatever’s going on in her life, whether she’s just had a baby, or she’s got a million things on at work, she’ll remain in a bubble of happiness.’ ‘I think my job enables me to overcome my social anxiety,’ says Fearne. On the radio I’m thinking, “I’ve got to do this.” If I don’t have a choice, it’s fine. On the phone, there’s a whole obstacle course of awkwardness awaiting me! The second you look like you’re not enjoying it, people stop believing in you.’Holly hopes that in ten years’ time she will still be on the This Morning sofa. ‘I’m very open with him, but there are certain things that Fearne will give me ten hours for and my husband will give me five minutes – Robert Pattinson! While I’m stressing on the pavement, wondering where my taxi is, she stomps off down the road to get the tube. ‘It’s been written by proper best mates – us,’ they say, ‘who’ve made mistakes and learnt a few lessons along the way.‘A lot of the time, I don’t feel that comfortable at parties. ’‘We’ve been dragged into this whole ageism, sexism thing because I took over from Jo Whiley on Radio 1 and Holly took over from Fern Britton. ’Holly has to rush off to relieve the nanny, while I stay chatting with Fearne. Holly was spotted aged 14 by Storm model agency, and progressed into presenting children’s telly for ITV aged 17. They haven’t stopped since, and Fearne in particular looks exhausted.
Fearne is more likely to be found in a field at a festival than on the red carpet, but they share a fearsome sense of ambition and a work ethic of the sort that can make you feel inadequate and exhausted.I faint quite a lot.’ I tell Holly I’ve been critical in print of the over-the-top, lamb-dressed-as-mutton gowns she wears to host Dancing on Ice. I find it easier to dress like that than in jeans and a T-shirt. Even on dress-down days, I still like to wear a well-put-together outfit.’Holly’s mum was an air stewardess; her father worked in double glazing.‘It comes on just after Christmas, and it’s just a huge explosion of sequins,’ she says, not minding at all. She married Dan Baldwin, a TV producer, three years ago.They are so close, so in tune, so up to speed with each other’s lives that I feel like the third wheel on a bicycle.They have been best friends since they met working for BBC children’s television ten years ago and, now both 29, found fame at roughly the same time.
